They originated here and they’ve been copied throughout China and Asia but Shanghai remains THE place to experience them. I waited over an hour one day doing the “tourist thing” but was slightly disappointed (you just can’t go back after you’ve done Din Tai Fung). Journey of St. Thomas the Apostle St. Thomas, also famously known as ‘doubting Thomas’, was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus who at first doubted the resurrection of Jesus. The same Thomas became a committed apostle after Jesus presented Himself to a group of His disciples, including the doubter. According to historians, St. Thomas came to India when the disciples of Jesus, also known as apostles, dispersed to preach in different parts of the world. He is said to have arrived in South India around the middle of the first century of the Christian era and founded Christian communities at several places. After travelling widely in Asia and making many disciples of his own, St. Thomas returned to South India where he was believed to have been assassinated by an arrow in AD 72. Behind the main alter in the church is a beautiful three paneled stained glass window portraying the story of St Thomas and the teachings of Jesus. Inside the cathedral, a 3 feet high statue of Virgin Mary, believed to have been brought from Portugal in 1543, is prominently displayed. Three Days Holiday Mark the Year of the Tiger Jan 26, 2010 Valery Garrett The city is bustling as housewives stock up the larder with foods meant to bring good fortune for the year ahead. New shoes and clothes, especially in the lucky color red, are bought, homes carefully cleaned, and all debts must be paid. Just before the three day holiday, the Kitchen God will return to heaven to report on the family’s behaviour to the Jade Emperor. His picture, is taken down and burnt, thus sending him on his way. But before he goes he is given a meal of sticky rice and honey, smeared over his mouth, so he will only tell sweet and flattering things. Flower Markets From 8th – 13th February flower markets will be set up in two locations, Victoria Park in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong island, and in Fa Hui Park in Mongkok in Kowloon. These markets which are open from 6pm and are free to enter, are an important part of the New Year celebrations. A large assortment of flowers and shrubs are sold, like kumquat trees, narcissus and peonies, believed to bring prosperity, and peach blossoms for longevity. The sights and scents are all add to the occasion. Flower Market Road in Kowloon is spectacular in the week before the Chinese New Year, when people gather to buy narcissi, sprays of plum blossom, and kumquat trees. Each signify good fortune in the year ahead, as well as adding colour in the grey winter months. New Year’s Eve On New Year’s Eve, 13th February, there will be a special dinner when all the family should be present. Certain foods are eaten which have names symbolising good fortune. For the first two days of the holiday no work must be done, especially not housework! Everyone is greeted with “Kung Hei Fat Choy,” a wish for prosperity in the coming year. Then laisee or lucky red packets containing small sums of money are given out to children and unmarried people. Chinese New Year’s Day Parade On February 14th the first day of the Year of the Tiger , the night parade is one of the best-loved events of the entire New Year’s celebrations, as Hong Kong puts on a world famous show. This is the 15th year the parade has been held put on by the Hong Kong Tourism Board , and again sponsored by Hong Kong’s airline, Cathay Pacific Airways. This year’s parade includes a stunning array of brightly coloured floats and international and local performing artists. The parade starts at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon and continues along Canton Road to Haiphong Road, turns right to Nathan Road then left to Salisbury Road, ending at the New World Centre. The whole area is transformed into a giant street party. The floats in the Chinese New Year Parade are always a magical part of the event! There will also be stage performances with international and local performers featuring multicultural acts in various hot spots around town for everyone to enjoy. The street party will start from 6pm along the parade route, and roving performers and interactive games will add fun and enhance the festivities prior to the start of the parade. The parade lasts from 8pm – 9.30pm and seats in the spectator stands open at 7pm. Check with Hong Kong Tourism Board for tickets. Fireworks on Second Day of New Year A spectacular display of fireworks takes place on the second night of the New Year, this year February 15th. The twenty minute show explodes in the harbour at 8pm and crowds start gathering from 6pm to get a good vantage point in Tsim Sha Tsui and on Hong Kong side. Firecrackers are set off in some areas of the New Territories but these are officially banned since riots took place in the 1960s. Fireworks are the acceptable form of celebration now. Third Day of the New Year Chinese New Year is the one time of the year when shops close in Hong Kong. This used to take place over the whole three days, but increasingly nowadays it just means the first day only. On the third day everyone goes out of the home as another day spent only with the family may cause arguments to break out. In any event, it’s a good excuse to go shopping. Vietnamese Boat Person Bikes Home to Find Roots Immigrant From the Vietnam War Uses Bicycle to Bridge Cultural Gap Jan 25, 2010 James Ellsworth Pham's book Catfish and Mandala, A Two-Wheeled Voyage through the Landscape and Memory of Vietnam (Picador, 1999) provides an excellent vehicle to explore travel in Vietnam and the phenomenon of one of history's refugee sagas. After the Vietnam War in 1975, the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees estimated that more than 1.5 million fled Vietnam as boat people and as many as 250,000 or 16% died. They left in overcrowded boats and faced pirates, rape, starvation, murder, and drowning. The survivors found many countries to welcome them however, with the U.S. accepting over 800,000 and Canada giving haven to 137,000. Pham's family ended up in California but they left several aunts, uncles and cousins back in Vietnam. Refugees: Strangers in a Strange Land Pham and his immediate family arrived in the United States in 1977. They had suffered the privations of overcrowded camps in Indonesia before being sponsored by the First Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. Americans there were kind, finding a janitor job for Pham's father (he was a teacher and officer in Vietnam) and helping the kids with school but language was a barrier. By 1978 the Phams "weaned ourselves from the charity teats" (p. 189) and moved to the coast to be closer to relatives who settled there. Cultural differences reared their heads often. The Vietnamese like to save face, often lying rather than offending. Once Pham's dad was arrested for being abusive to his children, a right he had in Vietnam, where corporal punishment for doing poorly in school or disobedience was acceptable. Sometimes Americans did not accept the newcomers either. While biking along the coast, Andrew often encountered prejudice - being spat upon and called names. He was stoical saying " some people throw trash because I am a bicyclist and not because of the slant of my eyes" (p. 38). Perhaps the biggest surprise was the way he was treated in Vietnam as a Vietnamese-American or Viet-kieu. Biking in Vietnam Pham was an avid bicyclist with over 2,300 miles of experience in North America with long treks in Mexico and the Pacific Northwest. He also biked in Japan for a month before arriving in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), arriving 20 years after his departure and staying for 8 months. He found that he was treated as second class, mistaken as Korean or jeered at when discovered he was not 'real' Vietnamese. Even his extended family was somewhat disappointed that this returning son did not bear gifts and money. His memories evoked pathos: the houses and courtyards of his childhood were rebuilt and renumbered, his first playmates were all gone, and his own house had become a community health clinic. As he said, "Too many things changed. Too much time passed. I'm different now...." (p. 98). However there were remarkable beaches to rest and reflect, and in Hanoi he spent time interpreting for back-packing tourists enjoying his role as a "cultural go-between". It is 1,700 km from Saigon to Hanoi and tour operators usually allow fifteen days, often including leapfrogging by train. Pham did bike all the way on his homeward journey from Hanoi to Phan Thiet, taking a 10 minute break for every hour and a half of pedalling. He said the heat was oppressive, accommodation was problematic, and competing with other modes of transportation was dangerous. According to a 1999 Vietnam Transport Police Bureau report , there were 20 million bicycles and 5.6 motorbikes for a population of 77 million. Now with a population of 86 million and over 1 million bikes and motorbikes sold each year the number is rising dramatically. Main roads are incredibly busy. Vietnamese use their bicycles and motorbikes as "bikes of burden", carrying freight like copper tubing or pigs for market. Pham observed (p. 125) that "a concrete divider keeps the chaos going in one direction from colliding head-on with the chaos going in the other direction" on many parts of Highway #1. There are several bike tours to choose from for assisted exploring in Vietnam. However a safer second option might be day-tripping, renting a bike for $10 a day in scenic places like Hué, Hoi An, and Halong Bay. Tourism is a growth industry in Vietnam and another decade has passed since Pham's re-entry to his old homeland. As the railway security officer in Hanoi ( p. 219) said to Pham, "Ah you are here to visit your father's roots...It is all a new lfe for everyone, no? North Vietnamese, South Vietnamese, Viet-kieu and Americans are all good people. It's all in the past. No ill feelings, no?" Recent personal experiences attest to the kindness and friendliness of Vietnam today. Still, riding a bike on the streets of Hanoi can seem like a form of Russian roulette until one gets the feel of the "dance". But the plan B of day-trip biking to heritage temples or fishing villages along off-piste paths is also very rewarding.

Agra Fort of Agra City, Uttar Pradesh, India Jan 6, 2010 Shanti Mahadevan Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site in the city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh, India . Situated on the right bank of River Yamuna, this fort is about 2.5 km northwest of Taj Mahal and quite near the Agra Cantonment Station area. The fort’s colossal double walls rise 20 m in height and measure 2.5 kilometers in circumference. Encircled by a moat, this red sandstone fort was the residence of three Mughal emperors – Akbar, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb. They made significant structural contributions and changes to this complex. The initial structures of the fort were built by Akbar, and later taken over by his grandson Shah Jahan, who added most of the marble creations. History of Agra Fort Agra Fort was originally a brick fort and the Chauhan Rajputs held it. Sikandar Lodi (1487-1517) was the first Sultan of Delhi who shifted from Delhi to Agra and lived in the fort. He governed the country from here. When he died in 1517, his son Ibrahim Lodi held the fort for nine years. He was defeated and killed in the battle of Panipat in 1526. During his period, he built several palaces, wells and a mosque in the fort. When Babur sent his son Humayun to Agra, he captured Agra Fort and seized a vast treasure which included the world famous Koh-I-Noor diamond. Humayun was coronated here in 1530. Agra's heyday came with the reign of Humayun's son, Akbar. Akbar decided to make it his capital. He renovated the fort with red sandstone. Its foundation was laid and it was built with bricks in the inner core, and with sandstone on external surfaces. Some 1,444,000 builders worked on it for almost eight years and completed the fort in 1573. When Shah Jahan (Akbar’s grandson) reigned, the site took on its current state. Legend has it that he built Taj Mahal for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. He destroyed some of the earlier buildings inside the fort in order to make his own. All his buildings were made of white marble and inlaid with gold and semi-precious gems. During his last days, he was imprisoned in the fort by his son, Aurangzeb. It is rumored that Shah Jahan died in Muasamman Burj, a tower with a marble balcony having a view of the Taj Mahal. Layout of Agra Fort The Agra Fort has a semi-circular plan and had initially four gates. Now there are only two gates - the Delhi Gate and the Amar Singh Gate. The Delhi Gate is considered the grandest and leads into an inner gate called the Hathi Pol or Elephant Gate. A draw-bridge and a crooked entrance make it impregnable. The Indian military still uses the northern part of the Agra Fort, hence the Delhi Gate is not allowed for use by the public. They use the Lahore Gate. The Lahore Gate is so named as it faces Lahore. It was renamed Amar Singh Gate by the British. It is similar to the Delhi Gate, both being made of red sandstone. Sites and Structures within Agra Fort Inside the Agra Fort are sites and structures : Anguri Bagh (Grape Garden) – a 85 square, geometrically arranged garden. Shah Jahani Mahal – was Shah Jahan’s first attempt at modification of the red sandstone palace. Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience) - was used to address people and listen to petitioners. It once housed the Peacock Throne. Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience) - was used to receive kings and dignitaries. It features black throne of Jahangir. Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) – was a royal dressing room featuring tiny mirror-like glass-mosaic decorations on the walls. Mina Masjid (Heavenly Mosque) – a private mosque used by mujahara. Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque) – a mosque built for use only by members of royal court. Nagina Masjid (Gem Mosque) – a mosque designed for the ladies of the court. Jahangiri Mahal – was built by Akbar for his son, Jahangir. Musamman Burj - a large, octagonal tower with a balcony facing the Taj Mahal. Khas Mahal – a white marble palace, one of the best examples of painting on white marble. Zenana Mina Bazaar (Ladies Bazaar) – was right next to the balcony where female merchants sold wares. A Grand Historical Restoration Project Jan 9, 2010 Brian Cross During more than two millennia of existence, the Grand Canal (Da Yun He, or Great Transport River) has played many critical roles - in the exercise of political power and military control, as an essential conduit for the movement of goods, and serving attempts to control the waters that periodically wreak havoc on the low-lying regions through which it travels. At other times, it has suffered from periodic disuse and neglect, to the point where quite recently it was in places described by local officials as an embarrassment, the black water a lifeless stink for the local people to endure. Today the waterways that collectively comprise the Grand Canal, or at least what is left of it as a living thoroughfare, are emerging as a focal point for tourism in the cities and regions concerned. In seeking to elevate the canal's status to levels that will attract both local and international attention, respective authorities are now addressing years of environmental degradation while raising public awareness of the canal and its legacy. The Grand Canal in History The Grand Canal has been a work in progress for centuries, from the pre-unification era of the Eastern Zhou period right up to the present and beyond. As understood today, the canal stretches 1794 km from Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province to Tongzhou on the outskirts of Beijing. Some 1500 years ago, it connected as far as Luoyang in modern-day Henan Province, the eastern capital of the Tang dynasty (618-907). Then it's total length exceeded 2700 km, utilising in parts one of the former riverbeds of the capricious Yellow River (Huang He). During the Yuan dynasty, (1271-1368) the canal was straightened to approximate its current course, thus serving a more direct link to Beijing, which became the imperial capital under Kublai Khan, the dynasty's first ruler. Despite the fact that 45% of the Yuan canal is now dry, what remains is still on such a vast scale as to defy attempts at describing it in singular terms. The Grand Canal needs to be seen for what it is; a network of roadways for use by waterborne traffic, lying north/south to provide an arterial link between the natural watercourses that flow from mountainous Western China through the Eastern plains. Those major rivers, primarily the Yellow and the Yangzi (Chang Jiang), were key determinants in the formation of China as a great civilization, and the Grand Canal's foundation and development over centuries significantly aided that process. In greatly easing the burden of transportation, the canal enabled the wealth and influence of China's rulers to grow and prosper through the efficient movement of goods and people. The Grand Canal Today On its navigable sectors the Grand Canal remains a busy thoroughfare for trade, although in many places the original course has been corrected or bypassed to improve efficiencies and make way for urban development. Those locations where commercial use has waned are in many cases ideally situated for the new phase in the canal's long life - its growing attention as a tourist attraction. China National Tourism Administration is overseeing a collective approach to the restoration of historic stretches in various cities along its original route, linking the efforts of numerous local authorities. A Grand Canal Joint Bidding Office operates in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, to oversee an application for UNESCO World Heritage listing. The tourist dollar is a major catalyst for the recognition now being afforded this enormous historical artifact. That development is not without controversy, as academics readily point out that the essence of the canal as constructed must be retained as part of any rejuvenation works. Commercial success is only possible due to the cultural legacy left during the canal's long history. At the same time, economic imperatives can now provide the means by which the Grand Canal's rich heritage, its untold stories, its huge benefits to the building of a nation and the price that had to be paid can gain due recognition. Pashan Lake at Pune, India Artificial Lake of Pune – A Haven for Bird Watchers Jan 8, 2010 Shanti Mahadevan Pashan Lake is a picturesque artificial lake in the outskirts of Pune city in India . It is located about 170 km from Mumbai and 12 km away from Pune airport. It is located off the road to the National Defense Academy. The manmade Pashan Lake is built by bunding a small rivulet – Ram Nadi which originates from Bavdhan and flows through Pashan, Sutarwadi, Baner to Someshwarwadi before flowing into the Mula River. Within the municipal limits of Pune city, Pashan has the maximum hill area of 5111.89 hectors. This excludes 23 fringe villages. The total catchment area is 40 sq km. This Pashan Lake once served as a source of water to old Pashan village for growing crops all the year round and to the nearby Governor’s house. The lake is a good place to relax during the evenings and weekends. There are many beautiful sights especially the evening sunsets. Migratory & Local Birds at Pashan Lake Pashan Lake attracts birds and is home to a wide range of migratory and residential birds. Post monsoons and summers are when one can spot rare species here and the lake is a haven for bird-watchers and for those studying Ornithology. The Pashan Lake has become a popular spot for bird lovers. Birds that are spotted here are: Coot, House Crow, Pond Heron, red-rumped swallow,White breasted Kingfisher, open billed stork, Spot bill, Purple Sunbird, Little cormorant, Indian whiskered tern, jungle Crow, Egret, bonnelli's eagle, marsh harrier, rufousbacked shrike, red vented bulbul, purple moorhen, Drongo, Indian pipit, Small Blue Kingfisher, jungle Babbler, pheasant tailed Jacana, cotton teal, pied kingfisher, shoveller, Large Pied Wagtail, pied male bush chat, purple heron, redwattled lapwing, magpie robin, mahratta woodpecker, gray heron, white and red lapwing, wren warbler, red-vented bulbul, and the red-wattle lapwing. Transformation of Pashan Lake in Progress The lake in Pune is now not as rich as it was before when seeing sixty species of birds in the morning was easy. In the near future, Pashan Lake is to be transformed into a bird sanctuary and this will be done in order to protect and conserve the uncommon bird species. Deforestation on nearby hills has caused heavy silt formation in the lake. This has decreased the depth of the lake from at least 50 feet to about 20 feet on account of the silt collected in it. But however, for recreation purpose, boating is provided here. Those interested in fishing need to seek prior permission. The Ipomea weed is also a major cause of the lake’s deterioration as it prevents the growth of other plants. The washing of trucks in the area also gives rise to pollution. For this, the Pashan Biodiversity Park has been proposed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The land of 200 hectors is owned by the state government. It runs along a hillock which has variable flat and dome-shaped topography. Most of the land is formed by rocky strata with a small layer of soil. The Rs 16.91 crore project will also have creation of an island inside the lake, besides embankment and plantation on the banks, fencing, and formation of marshy areas, development of an environment and education centre, construction of some parking facilities, a walkway and the most deserved bird watching hideout. Already the formation of the 17 acre island is over where seven acres of the island is above water and the rest ten are submerged. The main target of the project is on the local and migratory birds coming to the lake and to prevent human interference with these birds. Around the Pashan Lake are many government guesthouses, budget and luxury hotels for tourists . There are also variety of restaurants and fast food joints in the nearby localities. Best Time to Visit Pashan Lake For bird-watchers, the best time to visit Pashan Lake is from September to June. In order to avoid the scorching rays of the sun, it is advised to wear cottons, carry hats, and sunglasses. Visiting Hours are 8 am to 11.30 pm. By Road: Pashan Lake is near from Pune city and can be reached by auto rickshaws and taxis. By Rail: Pune has a railway station and can be reached from most cities. By Air: Pune has an airport and most flights touch Pune.

Southern Shores of India Invite Tourists and Christian Pilgrims Jan 18, 2010 Annie Wesley The church is the San Thome Basilica or St. Thomas Church which has a direct association with St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Christ believed to have been martyred at a nearby location called Saint Thomas Mount. Both the Basilica and the Mount are pilgrimage centers for christians and tourists from India and around the world. Journey of St. Thomas the Apostle St. Thomas, also famously known as ‘doubting Thomas’, was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus who at first doubted the resurrection of Jesus. The same Thomas became a committed apostle after Jesus presented Himself to a group of His disciples, including the doubter. According to historians, St. Thomas came to India when the disciples of Jesus, also known as apostles, dispersed to preach in different parts of the world. He is said to have arrived in South India around the middle of the first century of the Christian era and founded Christian communities at several places. After travelling widely in Asia and making many disciples of his own, St. Thomas returned to South India where he was believed to have been assassinated by an arrow in AD 72. Descendents of the people who became Christians as a result of St. Thomas’ preaching still live in India and are known as Syrian Christians and St. Thomas Christians. Church in Memory of St. Thomas : A small monument built by early Christians as a memorial to the martyred saint later became an important land mark and a church. Over the centuries the church was rebuilt many times. In 1523 the Portuguese rebuilt it in a small scale. It served as a Parish and lasted till the end of the nineteenth century. The tomb of St. Thomas is at the heart of the structure and forms the underground tomb chapel below the Basilica. Remains of St. Thomas are believed to have been preserved here. His Holiness Pope John Paul II visited and prayed at this tomb in 1986. Behind the main alter in the church is a beautiful three paneled stained glass window portraying the story of St Thomas and the teachings of Jesus. The central hall has 14 wooden plaques depicting scenes from the last days of Christ. Inside the cathedral, a 3 feet high statue of Virgin Mary, believed to have been brought from Portugal in 1543, is prominently displayed. The church also has an attached museum with exhibits concerning St. Thomas and the history of the church. Pilgrims Find Peace The San Thom Basilica is a popular pilgrimage centre for Christians in India. Prayers are scheduled in Tamil and English three times on week days and 6 times on Sunday. Some people believed that the sand taken from the tomb of St. Thomas has miraculous healing powers. A small souvenir card called St.Thomas Relic card has embedded in it little sand taken from the tomb of St.Thomas. Historic Church within Easy Reach for Tourists The Church is within the city limits of Chennai, India well connected by international and nationals flights. Once in the city, visitors can reach the Church by taking a bus or taxi. Train is also an option. The South line of the Chennai suburban railway has a station closeby. Kerala Vegetarian Dishes and Indian Spice Kerala offers a wide range of vegetarian dishes, especially in the predominantly Hindu south. Most popular are sambar, a vegetable stew in tamarind and pigeon pea broth and aviyal with lots of vegetables, curd, coconut and curry leaves. Pearl Spot from the backwaters is succulent baked with chillies, spices and curry leaves. Tapioca is a delicious accompaniment to curried fish. Traditional Cooking in Kerala, Festival Food Kerala’s signature dish is the appetising Sadya, the traditional festival food for family events and holidays. Presented in small portions on a banana leaf, it’s a sumptuous array of up to 40 vegetarian dishes, with rice and delicacies like banana or yam curry, cucumber in curd and coconut paste and hot pickles with lime, mango or ginger. There are crispy pappadams and a sweet milky pudding with raisins and cashews known as payasam. The annual Pongala held in Trivandrum is one of world’s largest sacred food rituals, attracting over two million women. They come from afar to set up their own little kitchens along the streets, hearth, pots and ingredients. When the sacred fire from the Attukal temple reaches one’s hearth, the food is cooked, offered to the gods and taken home with a blessing. Festival dates vary but are usually in the first quarter of the year.
