This is a very different pattern from previous years and could have been the result of high hotel prices in Sanya during the Spring Festival. By the end of February 2010, the average hotel reservation price for three-star, four-star and five-star hotels in Sanya were 450 yuan, 650 yuan, and 1,300 yuan respectively; which was about 60% lower than prices during Spring Festival. Chinese vacation goers are often overwhelmed by this site, and have been known to spend hours, wandering the length and breadth of it. Today, it is a major tourist attraction in Beijing, drawing people freely through its gates to admire the architecture, the parks and green spaces, and the narrow passages between them. This building complex was once the Imperial Palace, and now houses the Palace Museum. This was also the case with flights to Sanya. This difference has been compounded by the "white collar effect" which has become a major factor for post-festival travel. The number of tourists visiting Sanya in the first week after the Spring Festival was twice that of the seven-day holiday, and most of these were white collar workers who had postponed their travel until after the holiday week. The Forbidden City complex in Beijing is another must on any sight-seers list of amazing Chinese places. http://www.china.org.cn/travel/2010-03/04/content_19519917.htm www.china.org.cn According to an official of Ctrip.com's hotel department, hotel prices in major tourist cities like Guilin and Lijiang fell after the Spring Festival an average of 25%; while hotel reservations are up by 50%. 2010-03-04 10:17:26.0 Sanya hotel reservations up by 50% after festival Sanya, hotel ,reservations, festival,China, Hainan, Sanya hotel reservations up by 50% after festival Sanya hotel reservations up by 50% after festival 1007 7074061 Highlights /enpproperty--> According to an official of Ctrip.com's hotel department, hotel prices in major tourist cities like Guilin and Lijiang fell after the Spring Festival an average of 25%; while hotel reservations are up by 50%. It is called the Forbidden City because, during its time as a functioning walled city and imperial palace, no one could leave or enter without the approval of the Emperor himself. While it might not be the location that naturally comes to mind when you think about getting away for some relaxation, there are some things in China that will make your trip a truly special and relaxing one. Helambu, Langtang and Gosainkund can be tackled separately or combined in various ways, with treks from a few days to two weeks. Helambu is popular for its quick and easy access from the capital and medium altitude, below 3500 metres. The Langtang trek begins in Dhunche, a fairly long but scenic drive from Kathmandu, and needs at least five days to reach Kyanjing Gompa. The slightly longer route via Ghorepani and Poon Hill is worth the detour for unrivalled views of the Annapurna range and beyond. Nepal Himalaya, Langtang and Helambu near Kathmandu There are three trekking areas relatively close to Kathmandu, ideal for anyone with limited time. Nepal Top Hiking Trail, Everest Base Camp The trail starts from the end of the road in Jiri, involving a long demanding approach, or from Lukla with daily flights from Kathmandu, sometimes subject to delays. From Lukla, trekkers should allow at least eight days on the way up, including two nights in Namche and either Dingboche or Pheriche. They originated here and theyve been copied throughout China and Asia but Shanghai remains THE place to experience them. You can go inside and sit, but the tourist thing to do is wait in line for your 8rmb box of 16 xiao long bao. You swallow. You delicately take a dumpling between two chopsticks, being careful not to puncture the thin flour wrapper. Many airlines have partnerships with hotel providers and tour operators, and can either book you directly for the entirety of your package, or can at least direct you to their partner for more information. If you have booked a tour in China, this can be problematic.During the steaming process, the stock liquefies creating soup within the dumpling. You open your eyes, look at the basket of diminished xiao long bao, look around at your dining partners and quickly snatch another one. They follow strict guidelines actually weighing each ball of dough before wrapping the meat to ensure that the wrapper is consistently paper thin. The combination of flavors and textures makes this snack worth traveling for. Why Are They So Good? Its bite-sized comfort food. Originally from Taiwan, these guys have mastered the creation of the Shanghai dumplings. Youre so hungry, you want to scoop a dumpling onto your plate before the last of the steam cloud dissipates but that little voice inside your head says Wait! The Chinese name means little basket dumplings and they arrive at your table in a little bamboo steamer in groups of four to eight. What Are They? Simply, xiao long bao are little balls of minced pork combined with jellified pork or chicken stock wrapped in a thin flour skin. The best, hands-down-no-one-will-argue-best, place to eat xiao long bao is Din Tai Fung . He then sets the steamer in front of you. Inside each of these little angels hides the hot soup that cradles the ball of minced pork. Introduction Pronounced show (rhymes with cow) long bow (rhymes with cow), these little babies are the quintessential Shanghai cuisine. This is key, the pièce de résistance. I waited over an hour one day doing the tourist thing but was slightly disappointed (you just cant go back after youve done Din Tai Fung). If you prefer not to deal with a travel agent, you can contact the airlines directly. The basket isnt even finished and youre already flagging down a waitress to order more. Where Can You Get Them? The expectation is that the best place to eat xiao long bao is some undistinguished street stall but surprisingly, that isnt the case. You sip your tea idly as the minutes tick by, waiting for the dumplings to cool. Eventually, you can wait no longer. Crystal Jade This popular eatery has all kinds of dumplings (dim sum) on offer and their xiao long bao are acceptable. Nanxiang Restaurant Famous as the inventor of xiao long bao, Nanxiang at the heart of the Yu Garden area (look for the line outside waiting for take-away xiao long bao) is the most famous. Literally. Picture this: You await your order of xiao long bao. Be warned, if youre an orthodox xiao long bao eater, you might be put off by this heretical supplement. Then you chew, relishing the delicateness of the flour wrapper and the juiciness of the pork. It was over too quickly. They can hurt you! And you know it, youve been burned before. You can also enquire with the airline about the availability of last minute saver fares to China, which would be substantially less expensive, but would require you to be on standby for a flight that you might not end up taking. A waiter holds the tray and another removes the lid letting a cloud of steam escape from its bamboo confinement. You gingerly dip it into a little Chinese vinegar and then pop the dumpling into your mouth savoring the sensation that bursts forth. You carefully bite, letting the broth escape and fill your mouth. The Great Wall of China, the Xian Terracotta Warriors, and the Forbidden City all stand head and shoulders above any other hot spot in China. You can wander the buildings, see the sights, and capture a little bit of the Olympic spirit, one of Chinas vacation hot spots that few people will remember to look for.Long a British protectorate, it reverted to Chinese rule many years ago. But despite having Chinese rulers again, Hong Kong enjoys certain protections that the rest of China does not. Take your time to see as much of this city as you can. If you love to shop, you must go to the high end districts in Hong Kong, and check out the massive stores. Long the capital city of China, it is amazing how much of the country is represented here in the big city. The other hot spot in China and it is not fair to say it ranks below either of the other two listed choices here could be the city of Beijing. Number one has got to be a tie among some of the great historical buildings, statues and of course, walls. Flights will leave from Shanghai at 00:10 and will arrive at Brussels at 06:55 local time; return flights will depart at 13:50 local time and arrive Shanghai at 07:00 the following day. From its ancient past, which is on display in its many temples and other older buildings, to its more modern trappings, like the beautiful hotels and bustling business districts, Beijing offers sights and sounds that you can find nowhere else in China, let alone the world. The surprise might be the remnants of the recent Olympic Games in Beijing. As a result, Hong Kong is a thriving center of commerce and shipping. But if you visit the usual online travel sites, you will find that many of them will offer flight and hotel packages to the larger cities like Beijing. You will find that the results are not the same as when you search for a package to a Western destination with China, you will likely find more dedicated tour operators who specialize only in trips in and around China. Of course, you can do a search online for deals and packages going to China. Quite bizarre and pointless given the immeasurably more fun ice sleds, but it's there nonetheless. It costs 10 yuan to get onto the frozen lake and 20 to rent an ice sled (other things are more expensive), but the fun you can have with your family, friends or lover is well worth it. The best plan in my opinion is to head there earlier in the morning spend an hour or two playing on the ice and then enjoy a nice lunch in one of the many restaurants or bars that line the lake. After lunch, if it is not too cold, you can enjoy a nice walk through the hutong shops or even enjoy a hot drink at a local cafe. Just watch out for those annoying bike taxi/tour guides that assault you with requests of patronage every two seconds. It's much nicer to go exploring yourself. It's well worth your time, so what are you waiting for, get out there and enjoy some winter fun at Houhai Lake. Once the spring comes around, you will have to wait through the hot muggy Beijing summer before you can enjoy its wintry delights again. If you are considering a trip to Asia, you might be surprised at how hard it is to find a good package deal. Occupying ancient hutong the bars and shops offer a unique ambiance and artsy feel that have made it popular. Nearly all agree that sitting on couches by Houhai Lake while talking with your friends or slowly strolling through the hutong shops is very nice ...There are trips galore to New York, Paris or even Las Vegas but how do you find China vacation packages? The chatter, laughter and motion add a certain excitement. It's such a mix of interesting people. Lovers embrace as they peck each other's frozen lips at the edge of the lake while families with little children slip and slide with laughter in the middle. To round things out, near a small island in the middle of the lake vendors have set up small booths where you can play games like throwing darts at balloons or even buy snacks and drinks. But easily the strangest thing on the ice has to be an oversized goat wearing little leather booties. For a small fee, you can rent the goat to pull you around the ice on a sled. in the summer! With the freezing temperatures that have pushed their way into Beijing this year, such activities could make you loose a toe or finger to frostbite if you are not careful. But don't let the Siberian cold fronts stop you because they create a whole different Houhai experience that can only be enjoyed when things get a little bit nippy. Houhai Lake is now well frozen, so it's high time you put down your hot coco or coffee, throw an extra layer on and head downtown. Don't just go after work for a nice dinner and a beer at a pub because you will miss the whole winter experience. The best time to get a feel of Houhai's winter fun is in the late morning or early afternoon on the weekend. The frozen lake bursts into life with ice skaters, hockey lessons, ice sleds and even a local polar bear club. In an admirable effort to bring sanity to the crowds, the icy lake is divided into various sections according to the chosen activity. http://www.china.org.cn/travel/2010-02/25/content_19471814.htm www.china.org.cn Many are drawn to the Houhai area because it offers a more comfortable environment than its seedy Sanlitun cousin. 2010-02-25 10:36:08.0 Slipping into a fun time at Houhai fun time, China, Beijing, Houhai, Lake, Sanlitun cousin, Hutong Slipping into a fun time at Houhai Slipping into a fun time at Houhai 1007 7076141 Travel Talk /enpproperty--> Many are drawn to the Houhai area because it offers a more comfortable environment than its seedy Sanlitun cousin. Only a few tourists make it to the highest point of the Simatai Wall section where the "Heaven's Ladder" route leads to the 986-m-high "Beijing View" and "Angel's Tower." Not surprising really, as this section is 80-degrees steep in places and demands not only courage but a certain degree of climbing experience. The two towers on "Heaven's Bridge" are linked by a narrow 100-m-long ridge that is just 40 cm wide in places. http://www.china.org.cn/travel/2010-02/25/content_19471765.htm www.china.org.cn Vincent Liu has spent the last 13 years living in Beijing and has often seen the Great Wall at its most popular and well-known section, in Badaling, but that doesn't compare to what awaits him at the segment from Jinshanling to Simatai. 2010-02-25 10:34:14.0 Be a 'Hero of the Chinese Wall' China, Great wall, Badaling, Beijing, hreo, wimter, Be a 'Hero of the Chinese Wall' Be a 'Hero of the Chinese Wall' 1007 7076141 Travel Talk /enpproperty--> Vincent Liu has spent the last 13 years living in Beijing and has often seen the Great Wall at its most popular and well-known section, in Badaling, but that doesn't compare to what awaits him at the segment from Jinshanling to Simatai. Here, is what Liu calls the "real" Great Wall, a place where every meter has not been painstakingly restored. Having set off from the Chinese capital at 4 am, Liu eventually reaches his destination, 120 km northeast of Beijing, shortly after 9am with the sun still battling to shine through the early morning winter mist. The trip has cost Liu and his companion from London, John Ayers, 100 yuan ($15), although an organized tour to the same location, where visitors are collected from their hotel, would cost three times as much. Liu and Ayers not only wanted to save money but also wanted to travel independently of a tour group, so they would have the Great Wall to themselves. The walk along the Wall from Jinshanling to Simatai takes four to five hours and in contrast to Badaling, resembles a roller coaster without a safety certificate. The steep, undulating stairways are particularly dangerous, as many of the steps have crumbled away. At other points, the Wall looks as it might do in the aftermath of an earthquake. This section has been in place for more than 400 years and dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), when it was either built or restored. The section is, for the most part, in its original condition, and although the temperature hovers around freezing point, Liu has long since stuffed his jacket into his rucksack as he tackles yet another steep incline. "Badaling is swarming with tourists and T-shirt sellers. "Now I know how (Barack) Obama felt when he visited the Wall," says Ayers, in reference to the time China's most famous site was cordoned off at Badaling for the visit of the US president in November last year. "But I bet he didn't have to get up so early," he adds. When you compare a junket to Las Vegas to vacations to China, there is really no comparison. Either that, or go gamble your money away over cheap margaritas and flashy decor with the other party animals. China offers so much more in a vacation.Really, there is no comparison between the two. Whoever surmounts this challenge can enjoy a view of the lights of Beijing, as well as the title of "Hero of the Chinese Wall". For Liu and Sayers, an ascent up Heaven's Ladder would be too dangerous on this occasion as both already feel exhausted after their long trek from Beijing. But neither feels any sense of disappointment. See the historical sites, lose yourself in the local culture, fill up on the arts, and stay at the most beautiful hotels you could possibly imagine. Here we really have the Wall to ourselves," says Liu, who has come across just three hawkers and two other hikers in three hours. The pair passes by over 30 watchtowers with long stretches of Wall in between before they finally reach Simatai, where a second ticket has to be purchased if they want to progress any further. There is also another toll to cross a rope bridge from the eastern to the western section of the Simatai section. If you are sick of the phoniness of the neon and craziness of Vegas, China can offer you serenity, wonder, and an amazing adventure.

Hong Kong is unlike any other city in China. Open to visitors, The Pearl has several classes of entrance tickets providing access to various viewing platforms at different heights in the tower. From the ground, the buildings are prime examples of modern architecture. The Oriental Pearl Tower is perhaps the most famous skyscraper in Asia. With over 13 million people within its borders and more than 17 million if you take into account the surrounding municipalities, Beijing is the second largest city in China, after Shanghai. The capital city of China, it is the best known of the four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Included in the upper level tickets are entrance to the Shanghai History Museum in the basement of the Pearl, featuring wax replicas and models of historical Shanghai, and is worth a look when included in viewing platform admission prices. Rivaling The Pearl in terms of both height and design is the newer Shanghai World Financial Center. When you go to China on vacation, Xian must be on the itinerary if not for the above-listed reasons, then for the infamous Terracotta Warriors that were found nearby. Beijing is the obvious choice, as it will likely be the city that you fly into when you arrive in China. This is beginning of the legendary Silk Road that was the main route for commerce and trade for centuries in Asia. Xian was also the first capital city of what we now know as the country of China. The city has an ancient history, and the many palaces, religious temples and old tenements give you a taste of what Beijing was like in the past. Located in Eastern China where the Yangtze Rive meets the East China Sea, China, Shanghai is an easily accessible destination for travelers and the perfect starting point or final destination on a trip to China. Shanghai is divided by the Huangpu River, with colonial Old Shanghai located on the west bank, and the modern development of Pudong on the east. It is one of the most densely populated areas of China, cramming seven million people onto an island of less than 500 square miles. Hong Kong sits on the south coastal area of China, and is famous for its Western-style buildings and culture, despite a majority of the population being Chinese. One way tickets are available in either direction at ticket booths located at the tunnel entrance. Where should you go in China on vacation? It is easy to tackle the sites Pudong has to offer in a single day, as these popular attractions are compacted into a relatively small area. The BEst Sightseeing Observation Decks in Shanghai: The Oriental Pearl Tower , Jin Mao Tower , and the Shanghai World Financial Center Each of these towering buildings offers spectacular views of Shanghai, Pudong, and the outlying areas. The most picturesque views can be found at dusk as the lights across the river begin to light up The Bund. The Sightseeing Tunnel: Kitschy Transportation Fun Somewhat of a misnomer, The Sightseeing Tunnel provides kitsch value only. Its unique shape has come to represent modern Asian development. This has traditionally been the seat of power in China, and the Imperial Palace is still standing in the city, and now serves as a popular tourist attraction and museum. But despite being the second largest, it was still the first choice for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. There are fossil records that show that this area has been populated as long as six thousand years ago. The commercial and financial centre of Shanghai, Pudong is also home to the 2010 World Expo. Connected to Old Shanghai or Puxi by ferry, metro, and underground sightseeing tunnel, there are plenty of activities for visitors on this side of the river. Resembling a bottle opener, the Shanghai World Financial Center contains the world’s highest viewing platform and is currently the tallest building in China and Hong Kong. The Jin Mao Tower is home to the Park Hyatt Hotel’s famous open atrium between the 56th and 87th floor, as well as a large indoor observation deck on the 88th floor. The best view of futuristic Pudong itself is from The Bund, located in Old Shanghai. Shanghai Ocean Aquarium: The World’s Longest Underwater Tunnel Boasting the world’s longest underwater viewing tunnel, the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium will delight both the young, and young at heart. The Best Pudong Has to Offer in One Day Mar 8, 2010 Rachel West Shanghai offers a perfect blend of old world culture and new modern industrialism in China’s largest City. While the meals may not be worth the price, the views across the river to The Bund are well worth the cost of a drink on an outdoor patio or in a window-lined restaurant. The city is unique in China, and runs on a completely different system than the rest of the country. Open to tourists, each of these buildings contain viewing platforms at varying heights. A colony of Great Britain since the first Opium Wars of the 1800s, it reverted to Chinese rule in 1997. Feeding times in the exhibits vary and are posted at the aquarium’s entrance, usually with a morning and afternoon feeding, but are subject to change. Pudong Waterfront: Restaurants and Bars Pudong’s riverbank is lined with several restaurants and bars offering moderately overpriced Western foods for the most part. Displays feature information in English and provide plenty of photo opportunities. The differences mean that visiting Hong Kong is unlike any other trip within China. Hong Kong is among the worlds most important shipping and commerce centers. Compared to the metro and ferries, The Sightseeing Tunnel is the most expensive way to cross the river, but those with a sense of humour will enjoy the ride. Xian is less of a modern city than Beijing or Hong Kong, but it has important contributions to China that make it a worthy destination on your China trip. A well-maintained and modern aquarium, the complex features displays and exhibits from around the world. If you are going to China, there are three cities you must visit while you are there. There is a walkway winding along the river that provides a route taking in the various sights of towering skyscrapers, barges coming into dock, and new buildings being constructed. Individual tram cars smoothly and slowly glide along a track below the Huangpu River between Old and New Shanghai in a tunnel filled with flashing coloured lights. An unintentionally comical English narrative illustrates the various light effects such as “Meteor Shower” as the tram moves passengers across the river. The main attraction is the underwater tunnel, comprised of a series of moving walkways as visitors travel underwater amid sharks, turtles, and other sea life. The other Imperial holdover that will aid in your search for relaxing but stimulating sites is the Summer Palace. 9. Caochang originally served as a feed storage area during the Ming Dynasty. This former summer home features beautifully manicured gardens and green spaces, surrounding natural bodies of water. It is said that they were built alongside the old San Li River, and that the dried riverbed remains under Hutong No. "Grasses from elsewhere were brought down here to Caochang to be used for fodder for the palace's sheep," he said, "which is why the hutong are numbered like storehouses." During the Qing dynasty, due to a fear of internal rebellion, the city was divided: only the Manchu were allowed to live in the northern section of the city, while residents of the Han ethnicity were forced to move outside of the city walls and inhabit the southern area around Qianmen until the late governing period of the emperor Qian Long. The six-days-trip were described as "amazing" by some of the reporters. "I had prepared water, biscuits, chocolates when I started this trip, for I assumed that the trip would be difficult," said Christine Huang from CTI Television Incorporation. "But I was amazed by what I saw in Tibet. From China, you can travel the Silk Road to India, the Philippines, Pakistan, Thailand, and Iran, covering some 4000 miles. If that is the case, why not consider vacationing in China? You crave adventure, history, , culture and something completely original. Of course, unless you have a very extended vacation schedule, you wont have time to travel the whole thing. In China, you will find adventure around every corner. The region was modern. But while you are in China, you can view some great parts of this ancient trade route that brought commerce and adventure from every corner of the known world.Where else on earth can you travel on the fabled Silk Road? I never thought their income would be this high," Huang said. The reporters were from media groups such as Macao Daily News , Asian Television, CTI Television Incorporation, Associated Press of Pakistan, Janpan's NHK, and APTN. They interviewed local residents and visited temples in Lhasa and Nyingchi regions. "I was mostly impressed by the culture here," said David Wivell from APTN. "I was lucky to have the chance to take pictures of local dancing as a way celebrating the Tibetan New Year," David said. Massod Sattar Khan from the Associated Press of Pakistan said he thought the visit was very meaningful as it was a way to introduce Tibet to the outside world. "I hope we will have more such visits," he said. When you are looking to take your next vacation, you might decide that the all-inclusive resorts and identical beach hotels of any given island resort are getting a little old. We even got wireless services," Huang said. Huang said she interviewed some Tibetans who run a hotel and was amazed by their high income. "They could earn 70,000 to 80,000 yuan (10,248 to 11,713 U.S. dollars) a year. The walls are 1.3 to 1.5 meters thick and there are skylights on the roof and drain pipes underground to keep the place clear and dry. The museum reenacts the scene of transporting and storing up grains using human sized puppets and antique props such as bamboo baskets and grain scales. These clay warriors were discovered near Xian in the 1970s by a farmer who was drilling a new well. The Forbidden City. Only a small portion of the collection has been unearthed, but those that have been are an amazing sight. The combination of walls is nearly 4,000 miles long. It was built during 1400s in Ming Dynasty. However, from the ground, the Great Wall is an imposing and impressive sight to behold. A common misconception is that the Great Wall can be seen from space while the length of it would certainly be discernable, the width of less than thirty feet at its widest would mean that it would be impossible to see from space without a great amount of magnification. Visitors will also be presented a small bag of grain as souvenir. The museum opens from 9:50 to 5:00 and is free of charge. Out of all of the destinations on this planet, China vacations seem to be pretty low on the gotta go list of the average Western traveller. The specialty here is roasted duck, believed to be made from the imperial recipe. However, the endless patrons to this establishment are not actually drawn by the food, but the Kunqu Opera that plays in this restaurant as entertainment. No china vacations could be complete without a visit to this former Imperial Palace, located in the heart of Beijing. Nowadays, the many storehouses have scaled down to nine; inside two of them, we can still sense the faded history. One of the granaries, Nanxin storehouse, is said to be ten years older than the Forbidden City; it has been redecorated and welcomes customers as a restaurant. It was constructed in the 1400s, lasting more than 15 years and taking over a million men to build. In total, there are more than 8,000 figures in this collection, each featuring an amazing level of detail and craftsmanship. It is called the Forbidden City because, during its time as a functioning walled city and imperial palace, no one could leave or enter without the approval of the Emperor himself. The granary is as solid as new, the tour guide at the museum said. Today, it is more commonly known as the Palace Museum. Today, it is an architectural highlight of any trip to China. The most applauded piece is the "Peony Pavilion" a Tang Dynasty love drama. The restaurant also has several priceless antiques the owner uses as decorations; for example, the engraved board hanging on the top of the counter dates back to the 1700s. The project was said to have taken the labors of over 700,000 men, and incredibly, each of the figures is completely original no two warriors were allowed to be made the same. Originally built around 200 BC, there is very little that remains of the first Wall, but those that sprung up afterwards continue to stand to this day. But someone who wants to see the beauty and wonder of this world really ought to consider going to China, if only to see these three wonders: The Great Wall of China. Buried in the cluster of ancient buildings, Minghuang storehouse is nothing in particular judging from its grey brick walls. What are commonly referred to as a single wall are, in fact, several walls that have been built, rebuilt and maintained for centuries. The warriors are part of a funereal display for the first Emperor of Qin in 200 BC, around the time that the first part of the Great Wall was built. Walls had been built at different times to keep out different groups, including the Xiongnu, Mongolian and Manchurian peoples. The Mongols finally breached the Wall in 1644, and quickly took Beijing afterwards. The restaurant promises to provide supreme service and charges equally high prices because it includes the entrance fee to the food bill. Another of the granaries in use today is Minghuang storehouse which is open to the public as a museum.

Whale Watching in Sri Lanka China for Vacation Offers Serenity in Spades

The festival begins on the double fifth, or the fifth day of the fifth lunar month on the Chinese calendar. The different styles are usually broken up into families or sects, depending on their influence. This together with upwelling at the edge of the continental shelf create ideal conditions to support a food chain all year round in the warm tropical waters. Ten Million People are Estimated to go Whale Watching Every Year Feb 28, 2010 Sanjiva Wijesinha The Deep South of Sri Lanka is becoming known as one of the world's best locations (amongst the top three possibly) for watching Blue Whales and Sperm Whales - two of the most sought after marine mammals. In April, they return past the south coast on the return journey travelling west to the Arabian Sea passing Sri Lanka and the Maldives. He had first postulated this theory in a paper published in 1999 which reviewed sightings in the Maldives. Having reviewed his records up to mid 2002, a total of over two thousand sightings, he refined his hypothesis further in a paper Observations of cetaceans in the Maldives, 1990-2002 published in 2005 in the 'Journal of Cetacean Research and Management'. Cetacean Species in Sri Lankan Waters Sri Lankan waters are very rich in cetacean species with twenty seven species being recorded to date. The popular martial art of Kung Fu originated in China, although it is sometimes referred to in China by the original Mandarin term, wushu. One hundred and five river systems contribute a steady nutrient flow to the ocean. de Silva Wijeyeratne, G.(2008).Best for Blue (SLTPB Edition) Martial arts. Marine biologist Dr Charles Anderson believes that sightings peak between December and April because of a migration of whales Migration of Whales Dr Anderson has been developing a theory that there is an annual migration of whales between the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea which takes them near the shores of Sri Lanka. " The deep south of Sri Lanka may be one of the world's best locations (amongst the top three possibly) for watching Blue Whales and Sperm Whales which are two of the most sought after marine mammals. What is usually seen as a fun little event in Western culture is a much bigger deal in China. This holiday is a chance for Chinese citizens to enjoy the dragon boat races and other cultural activities, although the races are the focus of the day. Dragon boat racing. Due to the calm seas, Sperm Whales and Blue Whales come within sight of the land - and the period between December and April - offers an outstanding window of opportunity for observing these magnificent marine mammals. Ilangakoon A. (2002).Whales and Dolphins Sri Lanka (ISBN-10:955911428X) 2. The annual Duanwu Festival for dragon boat racing is a regular and popular holiday in China. In fact for seeing both Sperm and Blue Whales together, it may even turn out to be the best location in the world. It was only recently that the world became aware of the waters off the southern coast of this island nation off the south coast of India - the coastal strip between the ancient city of Galle and the new fishery harbour of Mirissa - as THE best place to watch Whales. "Whales can be seen with such ease here', says Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne, perhaps the man who has done most to put this area on the world watching map, " by just sailing out from the fishery harbour of Mirissa." Continental Shelf off South Sri Lanka One of the reasons this area of sea is so good for whale watching is because the continental shelf is at its closest near Mirissa and Dondra, about 6 km aqway from the coast. There are many different styles of combat training that fall into this category, and public displays and competitions are common in China not to mention, incredibly popular. Some fighting styles are based on the movements of predator animals, while some are meant to be used more purely as self defence, and others use the ancient movements of historical warrior training. However, to see marine mammals, location and time is all important. Observes Wijeyeratne," The south of Sri Lanka is blessed with beautiful beaches, snorkelling and some of the best boutique hotels and villas in the tropics. In fact for seeing both Sperm and Blue Whales together, Sri Lanka may even turn out to be the best location in the world ." ). References: 1. The races are so popular, that the influence has bled over into other Asian cultures and countries. He believes that the whales, especially Blue Whales and Sperm Whales, travel past the south coast in January from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal. This means that, on the Western calendar, the date can fluctuate wildly, being as early as May and as late as June. Trekking in Nepal Himalaya, Top Hiking Trails Vacations to China Better Than Vegas Wandering in these amazing places can give you hours or full days of sights to behold. Everest Base Camp, Annapurna and Langtang Helambu near Kathmandu Feb 28, 2010 Solange Hando Trekking in Nepal means steep hiking trails, up and down, measured in time not distance. Helambu, Langtang and Gosainkund can be tackled separately or combined in various ways, with treks from a few days to two weeks. The highest point is 3900 metres and one should allow up to two weeks for the return journey. The high Nepal Himalaya can induce altitude sickness but the risk may be minimized by climbing slowly and allowing plenty of rest. You can visit Tiananmen Square, and go through the Heavenly Gate to the Forbidden City, or go to the Imperial summer home. Treks start from Dumre or Ghorka, with long bus journeys from Kathmandu, or Pokhara accessed by road or plane. The Annapurna Sanctuary trek has some steep climbs but anyone of average fitness should cope. Paths are easy to follow but hiring a guide is recommended for safety and local knowledge. Whether it’s Everest Base Camp, Annapurna or Langtang near Kathmandu, Nepal has two trekking seasons, late March-April when rhododendrons come into bloom, and October when the summer monsoon has cleared the air and views are stunning. This is best tackled in the morning before the Khumbu glacier begins to shift in the blazing sun. From there, find peace in beauty with the Treasure Houses, or some spiritual peace at one of the many beautiful Buddhist temples in Beijing and other parts of China. The Namche Hill is testing but rewarded with the first views of Everest and after that, the panorama is simply breathtaking. The last camp is at Gorak Shep, 5160 metres, where the final stretch leads to Everest Base Camp. There are peaks, glaciers and superb viewpoints. The trail meanders through paddies and villages before heading up to the Machapuchre and Annapurna base camps with windswept and awesome views. One can return the same way, cross a 5000 metre pass into Helambu or take in the high altitude Gosainkund lakes where pilgrims bathe during the August full moon. If you are going to China for vacation but want to find some escapes from the business of your whirlwind trip, there are plenty of options for serenity seekers that make China a land of insight and quiet beauty. One can’t see Everest from base camp but there are fabulous views of the whole range from Kala Pattar, 460 metres above Gorak Shep, especially at sunset or sunrise. Trekking in Nepal , Annapurna The Annapurna has a choice of trails, from the popular Jomson trek, below 3000 metres but by means easy, to the arduous 18 day Annapurna Circuit crossing the Thorung La pass, at 5416 metres.
